Near the coast of Barabo, Surigeo del Sur, Philippines
The mummified body of Manfred Fritz Bajorat is found adrift in his yacht

Bajorat’s yacht was drifting about 62 miles (100 km) off the coast of Barabo in the Philippines when a group of local fishers spotted the vessel. They boarded to find the mummified remains of a man, covered in a thin blanket of grey material believed to have been mold.

The cause and time of the man’s death were not immediately clear. However, the position of the body — slumped over one arm next to radio transmitters — and the absence of signs of violence led to the assumption the man had died of natural causes. “The way he is sitting seems to indicate that death was unexpected, perhaps from a heart attack,” forensic criminologist Dr. Mark Benecke suggested. It was further believed the hot and salty ocean air was the cause for the preservation of the man’s body.

Documentation on board the yacht identified the man as Manfred Fritz Bajorat (59), an expert sailor from Germany who had spent 20 years on the waters. He had not been heard from in a year, when a friend contacted him via Facebook the previous February to congratulate Bajorat on his birthday.

An autopsy was conducted which revealed Bajorat had indeed died of a heart attack, with an estimated time of death of 7 days before his body was found.

Bajorat’s mummified body is included in the gallery below. Warning: it may be considered graphic to some.
