A woman with no identification is struck and killed by two cars on the highway

The woman, later dubbed simply Jane Doe 1990, was fatally struck by two westbound cars on Pacific Coast Highway. When police arrived at the scene, they found her body on the side of the road. Neither driver was cited during the incident and her death was deemed accidental.

The woman — who appeared to be between 17 and 24 — had a piece of hair wrapped around a finger similar to a ring and had a lock of hair in a pocket, but carried no identification. The woman’s face had trauma too severe to release a photograph to the public, and an artist depiction was created to help find her identity. During the investigation tips emerged suggesting the victim’s name was Andrea and she had moved to the area from the East Coast, specifically either Virginia or New York. Acquaintances also explained Andrea had informed them she was adopted and was in California with the hope of finding her biological parents.

Despite the tips, Andrea’s case went cold.

Andrea was featured on a 1995 episode of Unsolved Mysteries (Season 7, Episode 14) with hopes of rekindling public interest in her case, but no further advancements were made for decades.

In 2010, Andrea’s information was added to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System database. Andrea was finally identified 7 years later as Andrea Kuiper (pictured), after files from job applications from the U.S. Department of Agriculture from 1987 were added into the Automated Fingerprint Identification System.

Twenty-six-year-old Andrea Kuiper had left her home in Virginia to visit California. Her parents last heard of Andrea a month before her death and were told she was safe. They never heard or saw from her again, though they never filed a missing persons report and hoped she would suddenly reappear with a family of her own one day.
