The burned and decomposing body of 17-year-old Itaberli Lozano (pictured) is found after being murdered by his mother
On December 27, Itaberli engaged in an argument with his mother Tatiana Lozano Pereira (32), prompting him to leave the house to live with his grandmother briefly. He returned to his mother’s house two days later on December 29. Itaberli was found in a sugar cane field a little over a week after, though his corpse was destroyed beyond recognition by fire and decay, and he needed to be identified by a distinctive bracelet.
Police questioned Tatiana about her son leading to his disappearance and death. She initially claimed that, after he returned from his grandmother’s home, Itaberli threatened to kill Tatiana, his step-father José Fregonezi, and his 3-year-old step-sibling. Tatiana further claimed she stabbed her son to death in self-defense, and recruited Fregonezi to help burn and bury Itaberli’s body.
Police questioned this version of events after they discovered photos on Itaberli’s Facebook account, dated on December 26, showcasing injuries he claimed were made by a group of neighborhood teens hired by Tatiana to beat him. Teens in the area were questioned and two — Victor Roberto da Silva and Miller da Silva Barissa — confessed to being accessories to Itaberli’s murder. According to the teens, Tatiana lured Itaberli to her home under the pretense of wanting to reconcile. Once Itaberli was in the home, Tatiana ordered the teens to beat him to teach him “a lesson.” Finally, Tatiana herself used a knife to stab her son to death.
Faced with the confession, Tatiana changed her story to claim Itaberli was using drugs and bringing his sexual partners into her house, which enraged her. Itaberli’s paternal uncle Dario Rosa, however, disputed Tatiana’s claim. “He had a job, he was very polite, he never quarreled with anyone,” he said. “He only had problems with his mother, who did not accept that he was a homosexual.”
Tatiana, da Silva, and da Silva Barissa were all found guilty in Itaberli’s death. Tatiana was given a sentence of 25 years and 8 months in prison while her accomplices each received terms of 21 years and 8 months.
