Philip Hayes Markoff, known as the “Craigslist Killer,” kills himself in prison
Markoff had been arrested for the armed robberies of two women and the murder of a third, all of whom he came in contact with through Craigslist. The women offered services of a personal nature: one offered escort services, another massages, and the third lap dances. The murdered victim was Julissa Brisman, the second of the three victims. Allegedly, Markoff robbed the women to help meet expenses from medical school. Markoff proclaimed his innocence despite evidence against him including security footage as well as e-mail and phone records.
On August 15, 2010, Markoff cinched a plastic bag over his head to suffocate himself and stabbed himself with a pen and piece of metal fashioned into a crude scalpel, cutting arteries in his neck and legs. He had previously attempted suicide on several occasions since his incarceration, and was often placed on suicide watch. His suicide occurred the day after what would have been his first wedding anniversary, and he wrote the name of his former fiancé, as well as the word “pocket,” on the walls with his blood. While the word “pocket” initially confused investigators, it was discovered to have been a pet name the couple used for each other.
