FLW: “in honor of a true American hero: let’s roll”

Famous Last Words
David Ray Harris
Huntsville, Texas
June 30, 2004

“Sir, in honor of a true American hero: Let’s roll. Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. I’m done, warden.”

On September 1, 1985, Harris broke into an apartment where Mark Mays and Mays’ girlfriend, Roxanne Lockard, were sleeping. Harris ordered Mays at gunpoint into a bathroom, and forced Lockard into a pickup truck. Mays was able to free himself, grabbed his own gun, and confronted Harris in the complex’s parking lot. The resulting shootout left Mays fatally wounded with shots to the shoulders, chin, and chest; Harris was struck in the neck and shoulders. Lockard was able to escape unharmed and call for help. Harris fled the scene but was arrested four days later after being pulled over for drunk driving. No motive has been given as to why Harris targeted Mays and Lockard.

Harris quoted Todd Beamer, a passengers aboard Flight 93 when it was hijacked by terrorists on September 11, 2001. Beamer and other passengers formed a plan which involved jumping the terrorists and crashing the plane into the ground before it could reach its intended target: the Capitol Building. Directly before implementing the plan, Beamer was recorded during an in-flight call saying “Are you ready? Okay. Let’s roll.”
