Operation Neptune (commonly called D-Day), the beginning of Operation Overload, is launched.

By the end of the Operation on August 30, 1944, the Allies suffered between 225,606 and 226,386 casualties while Germany suffered roughly 400,000 to 530,000. Approximately 25,000 to 39,000 civilian deaths are also estimated.
