FLW: I don’t want to go home in the dark

Famous Last Words
William Sydney Porter
New York, New York
June 5, 1910

“Turn up the lights; I don’t want to go home in the dark.”

Porter is best remembered for his pen name O. Henry and for writing witty short stories with surprise endings. As he was dying at the age of 47 from cirrhosis of the liver, an enlarged heart, and complications of diabetes, he paraphrased a 1907 Harry Williams song entitled “I’m Afraid to Come Home in the Dark.”
