Adam Mayes (35, left) kills Jo Ann Bain (31) and Adrienne Bain (14, middle) before kidnapping Alexandria Bain (12, right) and Kyliyah Bain (8), allegedly because he was in love with Alexandria
Mayes had been friends with the Bains for years; Gary Bain’s had previously been married to Mayes’ eldest sister for 20 years. On April 27, Mayes attempted to kill Gary Bain by lacing two Tequila Sunrise cocktails with prescription drugs and Visine eye drops which can cause various effects including blurred vision, nausea, and vomiting, and slowing or stopping breathing. These effects did not present themselves in Mr. Bain, however.
In the middle of the night, Mayes woke Jo Ann claiming Kyliyah was outside sleepwalking. After luring Jo Ann outside, he struck her with a board and strangled her with a rope. He also smothered 14-year-old Adrienne. Mayes then loaded the bodies as well as the surviving daughters into his wife’s vehicle.
According to Adam’s wife, Teresa Mayes, Adam told her Alexandria hadn’t wanted to move to Arizona and had planned to live with the Mayeses. Also according to Teresa, when Adam loaded Alexandria and Kyliyah in the car and Teresa drove away from the home, Kyliyah began crying. Alexandria tried to calm her saying they were going to live with their new family, with Adam being their new father and Teresa their new mother.
Though he was questioned about the disappearances on April 29, there was no evidence of a crime and Mayes was not held. When he disappeared on May 1, he was declared a person of interest but still not yet a suspect. Around May 4, Teresa confessed to police that she had seen her husband kill Jo Ann and Adrienne. She also told investigators where the bodies had been buried. Teresa and Mayes’ mother were charged as accomplices to the murder and Adam was put on the FBI’s Most Wanted List.
Following a tip, police were able to find the missing girls and Mayes. Mayes shot himself in the head as police demanded he put his hands up. The girls were taken to a hospital and treated for bug bites, poison ivy rashes, and dehydration. Teresa pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of especially aggravated kidnapping, and was sentenced to 35 years, minus the 460 days she had already spent in prison. Mary Mayes, Adam’s mother, pleaded guilty to two counts of especially aggravated kidnapping and was sentenced to 13 1/2 years.
