Gowri “Auto” Shankar is executed for the murder of 6 teenage girls
During a two-year span between 1988 and 1989, at least 6 girls were abducted, raped, and murdered by Shankar and several of his associates. He was discovered after a girl managed to escape a failed abduction. She told police an auto rickshaw driver had attempted to kidnap her in front of a wine shop. Undercover officers were positioned in the wine shop and heard rumors that Shankar was behind the abductions and murders.
During trial, Shankar initially blamed movies for “making a devil of him.” Shortly before his execution, however, he claimed he was the muscle behind a ring of high-profile political figures who raped the girls and hired Shankar to abduct and dispose of the them.
Shankar was executed by hanging. Those who helped him carry out his crimes received varying sentences depending on their involvement, from 6 months of Rigorous Imprisonment to life sentences.
