Women grieve fallen soldiers in WWII (colorized)

April 18, 1945
Hilden, Germany
Three young women and a girl lay flowers at the feet of American soldiers, reportedly killed by a German soldier after they surrendered

A story often attached to the photo describes the girl and women as being recently liberated Russians from a labor camp. While this story is oft-repeated on blogs and social media platforms, I cannot conclusively verify this claim. Other sources claim they are local civilians or are liberated French and/or Jewish prisoners.

Regardless of the identities of the mourners, the scene is touching nonetheless.
