Mount Vesuvius erupts, killing more than 100 people

Though the volcano is most notorious for its impact on Pompeii, this eruption produced the most amount of lava in the volcano’s history. Because of the eruption, the Italian government was forced to allow the 1908 Summer Olympics to be relocated to London.
