Mafioso Joe Gallo is gunned down at Umberto’s Clam House while celebrating his birthday
Gallo was believed to have previously set up an unsuccessful hit against mob boss Joseph Colombo. Because of this allegation, when a Colombo associate in Umberto’s saw Gallo enter, he quickly left the restaurant to inform Colombo members. Four gunman burst into the restaurant firing at Gallo, striking his back, buttocks, and elbow, as he tried to flee the area. According to witnesses, it appeared as though Gallo was trying to distance himself and the gunfire from his family joining him for his birthday celebration (including his sister, wife, and daughter). He collapsed in the street and was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his wounds in the emergency department.
