Jonathan Schmitz (pictured, middle) shoots his secret admirer Scott Amedure (pictured, right) to death after Amedure confronts Schmitz about his crush on The Jenny Jones Show
Schmitz had been brought onto The Jenny Jones Show after being told a crush wanted to reveal their feelings for him. Schmitz stayed after the fact that he only agreed out of curiosity and because he was led to believe his admirer was a woman, though Show producers stated he was told his admirer could be male or female.
Schmitz was visibly embarrassed after finding out his purpose for being on the show, though he appeared to shake off the embarrassment and laughed at the situation which included somewhat detailed fantasies Amedure had had about him. During the show, Schmitz asserted he was “completely heterosexual.”
Three days after the show’s taping, Amedure left a “suggestive” note at Schmitz home. Schmitz withdrew some money from his bank, purchased a shotgun, and confronted Amedure about the note. After the discussion about the note, Schmitz went to his vehicle to retrieve the shotgun and shot Amedure twice in the chest before calling police and confessing to the murder.
Because of the outcome, the episode never aired on television though some clips were used by news outlets covering the case. Schmitz was found guilty and convicted of second-degree murder and illegal possession of a firearm in commission of a felony. He was sentenced to 25 to 50 years in prison and was released on August 22, 2017.
