Famous Last Words
Thomas de Mahy, marquis de Favras
Paris, France
February 19, 1790
“I see that you have made three spelling mistakes.”
De Mahy was executed for “planning against the people of France” by attempting to protect the royal family during the French Revolution.
The words most associated with de Mahy’s last statement are a jab at those who handed down his death warrant. However, they were spoken the day before his execution. His true final words were to his executioner: “come, my friend, do your duty.”
