A man, who had been paying rent to his stepfather, grew upset with which foods were purchased with his payments. A fight broke out, culminating in a duel with pitchforks, leaving the stepfather with severe wounds to his neck and head. Despite the possibly fatal wounds to the stepfather, both he and his stepson were arrested.
The family had had recent notoriety the year prior when the mother of the household accused a different man of fathering a child with her illegitimately. The case was dismissed and, the newspaper speculated, as the woman had no infant in her care during the pitchfork incident, she may have been falsely accusing the alleged father.
