Maritza Martin is shot to death by her ex-husband Emilio Nuñez while visiting their daughter’s grave
Nuñez blamed Martin for their 15-year-old daughter’s suicide the year before, claiming Martin’s new husband had sexually abused the daughter; investigators rejected this claim. While Nuñez was visiting his daughter’s grave, Martin also came to pay her respects. As Telemundo reporter Ingrid Cruz asked Martin about her daughter, Nuñez retrieved a gun from his vehicle and fired 12 times, hitting Martin’s head and torso 10 times. The cameraman captured the beginning of the attack before retreating with the interviewer.
Nuñez was found guilty and sentenced to 25 years to life. He is eligible for parole as of 2017. Martin, who left behind an 18-month-old baby, was buried next to her daughter.
The footage (which can be seen here) is also included in Traces of Death and Bowling for Columbine.
