This front page photo was a rare spectacle of the time, as cameras weren’t (and still aren’t) allowed during execution. Photographer Tom Howard snuck a single-plate camera into the execution, strapped to his ankle with a button to the shutter located in his jacket pocket. Because of Howard’s stealth in obtaining this photo, everyone witnessing an execution since had been required to lift their pant legs.
Ruth Snyder (the woman pictured below, as the electric current jolted her body) was convicted of killing her husband with the reluctant help of her lover, who was executed shortly after Snyder on January 12, 1928.
