Sidney Toms “suddenly became demented” causing his wife and children to flee and summon police and locked himself in his grocery store. During a stand-off, police shot tear gas into the store to entice Toms to surrender and Toms retaliated by throwing a knife and a peanut vending machine at them. Police entered the store, Toms slashed at the officers with a knife, and the police killed Toms with a shot to the head.
