December 23, 1978
The Tennessean (Nashville, TN) runs an article about a woman in Trenton, New Jersey who decapitated her mother, stabbed a small American flag into the neck, placed it in a plastic bag, rammed her car into the capitol building, and threw the package out of the vehicle’s window while yelling “Merry Christmas. This is what you want.”
Not included in this article is the rest of the backstory. The woman, Jean Zelinsky, had been living with her mother and at 48-years-old was still unmarried, possibly due to her lazy eye. Her mother, Julia (78), had reportedly resenting Jean for never marrying and had been verbally abusive towards Jean.
On December 22, Jean had had enough and strangled her mother before decapitating her. After the incident at the capitol building, Jean attempted suicide by cutting her own neck but she was stopped, restrained, and taken to the hospital. During trial, she was found not guilty by reason of insanity and confined to Trenton Psychiatric Hospital where she died in 2011 at the age of 80.
