FLW: don’t stand in his shoes

Famous Last Words
Richard Carpenter
Chicago, Illinois
December 19, 1958

“I don’t want anyone else to stand in my shoes.”

Carpenter was a serial robber and committed over 100 robberies before killing a police officer. His arrest was particularly violent as he put up a violent struggle; the Chicago Daily Tribune reported “it took 30 responding police squads and still Carpenter fought like a vicious animal.”

Before meeting his end in the electric chair, he broke the heels of his shoes and explained to the guard “I don’t want anyone else to stand in my shoes.”
