Murderer and sadist Jesse Harding Pomeroy is born
Starting at the age 11 years old, Pomeroy would kidnap young children, predominantly boys, to beat, strip, and torture them. He tortured 7 young boys in this fashion until he was caught, his face distinctive due to a hairlip and completely white eye. He was apprehended and sentenced to a boarding school until his 21st birthday, but was released after a year and a half. After his release, he murdered his only female victim, 10-year-old Katie Curran, and a 4-year-old boy named Horace Millen who was beaten and slashed so severely he was almost decapitated.
He was arrested for the murders of the two children at the age of 14 and confessed to the murders of 27 other children; police discovered the bodies of 12 buried near his home. During his trial, a claim was made that his violent and sadistic temperament was a result of popular Dime Novels which glorified violence and immoral lifestyles, though the theory was quickly discarded when Pomeroy declared he had never read any of these novels.
Although the public demanded he be executed for his crimes, due to his age he was sentenced to life in prison, the good portion of which was spent in solitary confinement, until his death at the age of 72.
