“We all reveal … our manifestations … This manifestation is over … That’s all …”

Author of War and Peace and Anna Karenina, Tolstoy left his home at the age of 82 to live out his days as a peasant. On his way to a rural Russian village, he contracted pneumonia and died a couple days later. His last words, recounted by his close friend and secretary Vladimir Chertkov, alluded to death. Tolstoy had believed life was a manifestation of the spirit of God, temporarily confined to a body.
