Amityville, Long Island, New York
Ronald DeFeo, Jr. shoots and kills his entire family
The basis for the book and movie The Amityville Horror, DeFeo killed his father Ronald, Sr. (44), mother Louise (42), and four siblings: Dawn (18), Allison (13), Marc (12), and John Matthew (9).
The murders gained a deal of controversy, due to the facts that the neighbors did not hear any gunshots, the majority of the family were not awakened by the sounds of the gun, and all victims were found laying on their stomachs.
DeFeo first claimed the family was killed in a mob hit. He also claimed the oldest daughter Dawn shot the family’s father Ronald and, distraught, the mother Louise shot the other siblings before Ronald Jr. shot her. During questioning, DeFeo asked police how to go about collecting insurance on the family members leading them to believe he murdered them for profit. DeFeo was sentenced to 6 consecutive sentences of 25 years to life.
