FLW: crimes committed in the name of Liberty

Famous Last Words
Madame Roland
Paris, France
November 8, 1793

“O Liberty! Liberty! What crimes are committed in your name!”

Madame Roland was a victim of the Reign of Terror. She proclaimed her innocence of treason. She spoke her Last Words to a statute of Liberty before being beheaded by the guillotine. Her husband, whose escape she was able to ensure, learned of his wife’s death two days later. He committed suicide by placing a stiletto against a tree and running into it, piercing his heart. He left a note reading “Whoever finds these remains, respect them as those of a virtuous man. After hearing of my wife’s death, I would not stay another day in a world so stained with crime.”
