A young girl’s grave, designed to comfort her during storms

October 30, 1871
Natchez, Mississippi
Florence Irene Ford dies at the age of 10 from Yellow Fever

Though Florence’s death is sad, her grave is what makes her memorable. In life, Florence was terrified of thunderstorms, so much so that her mother had a specialty grave built for the little girl. Behind the headstone is a set of cellar doors leading to a window of Florence’s coffin. During storms, Mrs. Ford would go down the stairs to comfort her daughter.

Today, the doors are still open but the window has been walled up to prevent vandalism.
