Gardner was convicted of killing two restaurant employees during a robbery in which he stole a little under $2,700; he spent the money on a fur coat, a car, and a St. Bernard puppy. Five days before the double homicide, he robbed killed a retiree who was giving his dog a bubble bath. He confessed to all 3 murders after his arrest though he later proclaimed his innocence.
