FLW: died doing his duty

Famous Last Words
Horatio Nelson
Cape Trafalgar, Spain
October 21, 1805

“Thank God I have done my duty … Drink, drink, fan, fan, rub, rub.”

Nelson, famously known to have ignored his admiral’s signal to call of an attack by holding the telescope to his blind eye (where the phrase “turn a blind eye” originates), was shot through the backbone during a naval battle. His final words were a request for a lemonade and wine mixture, to be fanned to keep his developing fever down, and to have his chest massaged to alleviate some of his pain before ending faintly with “God and my country.”
