Famous Last Words
Marie Antoinette
October 16, 1793
Paris, France

“Pardon me, monsieur. It was not on purpose.”

Marie Antoinette, a member of the French aristocracy who spent money on luxuries while her people starved, was a victim of the French Revolution, sentenced to death by guillotine for the charges of depletion of the national treasury, conspiracy against the internal and external security of the State, and intelligence with the enemy.

On her way to her death, she accidentally stepped on her executioner’s foot. She spoke her last words to him in apology.
