Luby’s shooting

October 16, 1991
Killeen, Texas
George Hennard drives his pickup truck into a Luby’s Cafeteria, begins shooting patrons, killing 23 and wounding 27 before killing himself

The attack seems to be motivated by sexism as Hennard reportedly yelled “All women of Killeen and Belton are vipers! This is what you’ve done to me and my family! This is what Bell County did to me…This is payback day!” His roommate also reported he was prejudiced against women, ethnic minorities, and gay people.

The cafeteria was busy due to National Boss’s Day, with 140 patrons present at the time of the attack. One of the patrons jumped through a window, sustaining injuries in the process, but providing an escape route for himself and other customers.

Hennard reportedly walked through the restaurant, stalking customers. He shot 50, killing 23, their ages ranging from 30 to 71. Hennard retreated to a bathroom and shot himself after being shot by police 4 times. His full motive for the attack remains unknown as he left no suicide notes and can only be speculated upon.
