The mysterious grave of the Female Stranger

October 14, 1816
Alexandria, Virginia
A Female Stranger dies in her husband’s arms

The true identity of the Female Stranger is unknown but many local legends about her have persisted through the years. One such story claims the Female Stranger and her husband visited a hotel. The wife seemed ill, possibly from typhoid fever, and her health only deteriorated. The husband summoned hotel staff and doctors to her room and requested they take an oath to never reveal his or his wife’s identities, a request that all agreed to honor. The woman died in her husband’s arms and he left town shortly after her burial, never to be seen in the town again.
