Charles Carl Roberts IV enters an Amish school, shoots 10 girls 5 of whom die, then kills himself
Roberts armed himself with a handgun, shotgun, and rifle then stormed into a local Amish school. He ordered those inside the school to line up in front of the chalkboard, then released the boys, a pregnant woman, and 3 parents with infants. The remaining girls, aged 6-13, were shot execution-style; 3 died at the scene, 2 died from their injuries at the hospital, and the other 5 survived in critical condition. Roberts then shot himself.
According to suicide notes left behind, Roberts felt filled with self-hatred for molesting family members 20 years before. He confessed to molesting a 3-year-old and a 5-year-old, both female relatives, when he was 12 (though both victims denied the claims) and expressed an urge to molest again. He also claimed to be angry at God for the death of a premature infant child of his.
The Amish community, deeply affected by grief, made statements focusing on forgiveness. The grandfather of one murdered victim reportedly stated “We must not think evil of this man,” while a member of another community told CNN “I do not think there’s anybody here that wants to do anything but forgive and not only reach out to those who have suffered a loss in that way but to reach out to the family of the man who committed these acts.”
