George Emil Banks goes on a shooting spree, targeting former girlfriends and his children by them, killing 13 and wounding 1
Banks, a prison guard as well as the son of a black man and a white woman, experienced racism growing up due to his mixed heritage, something he claimed he was fearful his own children would experience. Armed with an AR-15, he began his deadly spree starting in his own home, killing 3 women (all former girlfriends and mothers to his children, 2 of whom were sisters) and 5 children (4 of whom were his own).
He then visited a mobile home park, killing another former girlfriend and their son, as well as his ex-girlfriend’s mother and nephew. His ex-girlfriend’s brother had been hiding in a closet and avoided detection from Banks, and was able to call police about the murders.
Police were able to locate Banks and attempted to end the ensuing stand-off without any additional casualties. They asked Banks’ mother to talk him out, reported a false radio news report claiming the children were still alive and were in need of life-saving blood transfusions, and were finally successful when a co-worker coerced him into custody, ending the 4-hour stand-off.
His victims were:
