Police Officer Moira Smith leads an injured Edward Nicholls from the World Trade Center
Shortly after this photograph was taken, Officer Smith returned into the building to assist more injured civilians. Sadly, as she reentered the building, it collapsed, making Officer Smith one of the 2,976 fatalities of the 9/11 attacks. Officer Smith was posthumously named Glamour magazine’s “Woman of the Year,” and has a playground named in her honor.
